That is the question!
You see, with our first baby boy, Braylen, I cloth diapered him 99% of the time. At home, when we left the house for outings, etc. The only time he was in a disposable was overnight, since I never could find a diaper that was able to keep him dry for the 12 hours he sleeps. I kept up this routine with him until he was about 20 months old. At that point, my hubby and I decided that his poop was just too freaking nasty for us to handle it with cloth anymore {tmi!? He will love reading this some day!}.
So at that point we switched to disposable 100% of the time, and then 5 months later he was potty trained. I assumed that I would follow in those same footsteps with our second baby boy, Winston. I knew I would use disposable for the first month or so just to give myself time to adjust to life with two kids. But then a month rolled around, and I just really didn’t want to deal with cloth and all that went with it quite yet.
So I told myself that when Winston turned 2 1/2 months I would switch. I literally had to mentally prepare myself for this. Now don’t get me wrong, I love so many things about cloth diapers, but I also despise things as well. The fact that CDing meant even more laundry than I was already doing seemed so sucky. Also, I got so used to the easiness of disposables since that’s all we had Bray in for the last few months. Not having to bring a wet bag and bulky extra diapers with me. Not having to worry about the diapers leaking {because no matter what I did with Bray, he would always leak if it was on for more than 2 1/2 hours}. Not having to worry about ‘running out’ and having to do a wash load ASAP.
And one thing that a lot of CDing mamas don’t notice since they are around it constantly–the PEE SMELL that takes over. I knew that Bray’s diapers smelled, even in a zippered wet bag, and washed every other day. BUT the other day I walked in to a room of a baby I know that is also cloth diapered, and the pee smell hit me like a ton of bricks! When you are around it constantly it doesn’t seem that bad, but man it is!
I didn’t want that smell to take over the room again! Sooo… here I am–stuck. I have all these fantastic cloth diapers that are in great condition since I rarely ever dried them in the dryer {they were line dried in the sun 90% of the time}. I go to Target, and pick up a pack of their new up & up cotton-enhanced diapers and I just want to use those all the time. I know some people tend to be loyal to a certain brand, but I highly suggest you check out the up & up brand diapers, because that is all I use for disposable.
They just came out with a new cotton enhanced diaper that is amazing. They added in the cotton to not only make the diaper softer for the baby, but cotton also holds up to 25 times its weight in water–so this baby works great not only during the day, but also as a night diaper!! And the liners are hypoallergenic, and are elemental chlorine free! I also recently picked up a pack of their new botanical wipes and am in love. Not only are they made from 100% plant based materials, but they are also alcohol free {and hypoallergenic}- so I use them not only on his booty, but also his hands and face- worry free! And I love that I can decide if I want the scented, unscented, or sensitive!
So pretty much then… I want to use disposable! What would you do? Sell the cloth and at least make some of your money back {they sell surprisingly well} and just make life a little easier by using disposable? I just don’t know if I can imagine taking the time to not only cloth diaper, but also use the cloth wipes again this time around like I did last! So.Much.Work! Especially when I am such a lover of the up & up diapers and wipes already!!
And since I love these diapers, up & up products, and Target in general… how about a chance to win one $100 Target GiftCard? To enter, all you have to do to enter is answer this: What is an up & up product that you have been wanting to try, but haven’t gotten the chance to yet?

I have not tried the new cotton enhance Up & Up diapers or the botanical wipes. My son is still in diapers, so I would love to try both of these products. I typically use Huggies, but if these work as well, I would switch in a heartbeat to save money.

We use their saline solution quite a bit and love it. Checking out different diapers since having our little one and was cautious to try the up and up diapers. . Next time we’re at Target, which is a LOT lately, going to pick some up to try along with the wipes. Have tried a name brand “natural” wipe and not 100%sold on it so will definitely try the up and up brand wipes.

I see so many of my friends’ kids wearing the up and up diapers you mentioned and would love to give those a try. I also know target sells some cloth, and I’m interested in starting to CD, but I’m afraid of the up front cost and me not liking it after spending so much on a pile of cloth. Eek.

Give yourself a break and go with the disposable! You’re a great momma and the Up&Up diapers are amazing (I use them on my son). I would sell your cloth diapers. That way another mom can get great use out of them and you can just relax and enjoy life. Before you know it, your youngest will be potty trained and none of it will even matter anymore. 🙂
Lauren says
Hmmm, I feel like I’ve used every single Up and Up product ever made haha. But, I think I might have to give those wipes a try! After I check their rating on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database 🙂
Georgia Monroe says
Not sure what CD system you use, but we do the prefolds and covers and I am finding it pretty easy to mange. I have 6 or so Covers and almost 50 prefolds and I do a load twice a week. I also don’t fold the prefolds, just pile them in a basket. Just a thought for you! 🙂

I love the Up&Up diapers; I started using them when my son was four months old after developing a bad rash from huggies. I’ve never looked back! (Okay, once, when I tried the Honest Company’s freebies… but switched back to my favorite). The quality and price are awesome and I love that they have improved the product.
I have never tried the Up & Up bandaids/bandages. My kids are constantly getting scrapes, so this would be something new that I would love to try.

For my entry: I haven’t tried many of the up&up products, mostly because I try to avoid going to Target or I spend too much money. If I had $100 to spend on up&up products, I would most likely buy diapers because that’s what we’re using the most of right now.
My 3rd baby is only a week or two younger than your baby, and I have cloth diapered all my children. This baby has kicked my butt though and I am WAY more lax about it. With my first I cloth diapered her all the time, at night, going out, etc. And you really can’t go much more than a couple hours with them because they do soak through. That is my biggest complaint. I can deal with the laundry. But my daughter would get ammonia burns from wearing cloth diapers overnight no matter what I tried to do to clean them, different materials, etc. So with my second, I just cloth diapered during the day and at home. If we were going to be out and about for most of the day, then I would just do disposables. Always disposables at night. Now with my third, I kinda just do it here and there. She is getting too big for her newborn cloth diapers and my 2nd refuses to be potty trained, so I’m kind of running short on them (mostly that’s just an excuse). I haven’t used my cloth wipes in forever. Today she wore disposables all day. Sometimes I’m too lazy to go upstairs to grab a cloth diaper, so I just use a disposable if they’re downstairs already. Sometimes I just don’t want to deal with a bulky diaper, or changing her clothes because I left the cloth diaper on too long. I had a lot of diapers given to me when my daughter was born, so I kind of had the excuse to be lazy. I hate to spend money on diapers when I have cloth diapers that are already paid for.
I would say keep the cloth diapers and use them when you can, but don’t sweat it when you don’t.
