Woohoo!!! Today J and I have been together for SIX years! I can’t even believe it. I’m going to have to start looking up expensive presents for him just so I can show him how much he means to me. I’m so lucky! I remember so vividly the night we first met. Then how he pursued me for a couple of weeks before I was willing to go on a date with him:) Oh our first date! Haha, I was such a brat. We went to a haunted house {it being only a couple of days before Halloween and all} and he kept on trying to hold my hand while walking through the house. Every time he went for it, I would instead just slip my arm through his! I had no idea if I liked him at all, so I didn’t want him to automatically think that I did because I held his hand. Wow, what was I thinking {or not thinking!?}.
Maybe I was just nervous. It was our first date after all! Thinking about it now though, I certainly had it easy. I didn’t have to worry about going online and using dating apps to find him (or for him to find me). I didn’t worry about whether or not he was a catfish, or if he was genuinely a nice guy. One of my friends was telling me about how she met someone online and she thought he was great. Until she went on a site that did a people search, she said she was lucky that she did. I couldn’t believe it when she told me! It really made me realize how nice and easy my dating life has been. Particularly as J was pretty much perfect right from the very beginning. I mean what’s not to love about going to a haunted house for your first date!?
Following this dating guide, the most important detail related to the first date is location, location, location. If you are selecting the place or have any influence on where you will go, don’t take this decision lightly. While you don’t want to overthink it either, the location is critical to help set your date experience up for success. Consider a site that allows you to have a conversation, but also will enable you to end the date early (or extend it) based on how the conversation is going. Restaurant and bar settings often provide the right ambiance for a first date. Though, if you have some insight into your date and their interests, there are some more unusual options that you can pursue as well, exactly like our haunted house! Just make sure that you can spend some time talking and getting to know each other, as we did.
After the haunted house we went to rent a movie and he let me choose..and for some weird reason I chose ‘Mean Girls’. I have no idea why I chose that, because to this day I don’t even like that movie, or even the idea of it! But he was amazing and acted exited to see it:)
Another example of what a brat I was is this: I thought that if I let him pay for everything that night, then he once again would assume that I for sure liked him. Well, I couldn’t let that happen! So what do I do, I stuffed $5 {the cost of the movie rental} into his glove compartment. Now there could be no blame on me if I ended up not liking him. That fact still cracks both of us up!!One of the cutest parts of the night was right before we walked in to my apartment, he said he had a gift for me. A gift, what?! It was a bottle of Pepto-Bismol!!! Oh man! I guess I had told him on the phone the night before our date that my tummy was hurting. He got me a bottle of Pepto-Bismol! I still can’t decide if that was the: sweetest thing, most awkward thing, or most embarrassing thing, that could have happened! At the end of the night he left me with a sweet kiss on the cheek:)
J I love you more than words can express, especially my poor written ones:) You are my best friend, my one and only love, and partner for life. Thank you for loving me like Christ loves.

I LOVE the fact that this is the first picture I showed my mom and dad of J. They were definitely hesitant that this was their daughters new boyfriend:) It was Halloween though, so no worries.
The night he proposed June 22, 2007 |
Lets be honest here, why on earth did he want to propose to me when I was looking like that?! He proposed to me at a Young Life camp that we were both working at for a month:) Im a lucky lucky luckkkyy girl.

Absolutely beautiful photos! Congrats on your six years together. I absolutely love when I find other couples who love each other as much as my husband and I do. It inspires me knowing there are still healthy, loving relationships out there built to last.

So crazy that I just came across your blog. Crazy as in I hopped on the link to this post and that is the EXACT date my husband and I had our first date. We got married in 2008 as well, but we were married September 1. Congratulations – I like your blog and will definitely be adding to my Google Reader feed!
