DIY Cork Trivet

With Thanksgiving coming up next week my creative juices have been flowing. Since we are hosting 20 family members, I just want to get anything and everything that I can done ahead of time. Now this project definitely wasn’t a must have for Thanksgiving, but I think it will be nice. I am a total wine lover {obviously not when i’m making a baby though-don’t worry} and because of that, and the help of a friend, I have a mass amount of wine corks. I even made a Fall wreath out of them a few months back.

Knowing that there is going to be a million and one dishes displayed at dinner time next Thursday, and only owning three other trivets, I decided to make one. My inspiration was from Whole Living, where they showcased a wine cork trivet they made. I didn’t have one of those metal hose clamps at my house, but I did have embroidery hoops that I got at Savers {a pack of 10} for $5. The hoop worked amazingly! Here was the process:

I started by gathering enough corks to fill the hoop, and tried to make sure they were somewhat the same height.

I realized right away the the corks were a little too tall for my preference, and debated on if I really needed to cut them shorter. I totally didn’t want to do this because, well I wanted to take a nap instead {just the honest truth}..but I pushed through and chopped them all almost in half.

I then hot glued the corks together from the bottom. I didn’t take each one out and smother it in glue. I simply added a dot or two as in-between the corks as I could get. The hoop itself held them together pretty tight, but I wanted some extra reinforcement.

And thats it friends! Super simple. I didn’t have to cut the corks down this project would have taken me less that 5 minutes. All together I think I spent about 20. Not too shabby considering I now have an extra trivet that cost me $.50!! {the price of the hoop}

I know it doesn’t look perfectly level, and thats because its not. Have you ever tried cutting down cork. Its not the easiest thing. BUT I put multiple pots and pans on the trivet and it totally didn’t make a difference at all. All the dishes laid flat and weren’t wobbly at all. When I sent J a picture of it, he thought I was going to hang it on a wall as some form of cork art, and said he didn’t really like it. Haha, oh hubbys and not knowing what a trivet is;)

    hey, this is a great idea. i just have one question: how come most of your corks don’t have holes in them? you know from the cork screw?

    This is such a great idea! I have a bunch of corks that I’ve been saving, but until now, I haven’t quite known what to do with them!

    Susann and renewed- mine definitely have the cork screw holes in them, but they arent noticeable at all. Maybe its because I was a server for so long, so I really know how to open a bottle?! Haha, I dont know! But im sure if you did this yu wouldnt notice the holes either.
    Adv- I know, i totally need to embrace the naps! Supposedly next week is when im supposed to get all the energy back, and im hoping for it!
