We just finished putting on all the hardware last night because we have been waiting on an order of the pulls. Yay for getting final touches finished!Here is a step-by-step tutorial of how to install hardware, enjoy! For this kind of project, you’re going to need tools such as a jig so that you can get the job done easily and efficiently. You can check out a buying guide here for them if you’re lacking in this particular type of tool.
Supplies:
Drill
1/4″ Drill Bit
3/8″ Drill Bit
Phillips head or Flat head screw driver
Painters Tape
Pen
Mounting Jig for pulls and Jig for knobs {available at Home Depot for around $5 each}
Knobs
Pulls {We purchased ours at coolknobsandpulls.com}
Pulls:
Steps:
1. Put some paper inside your drawer to catch the wood chips/left overs from your drill bit. We also put a piece of tape that acts as a catcher in the drawer. Just secure the bottom half and fold back the top half. Apparently this is a pretty common trick, but we learned about it from YoungHouseLove.
2. Measure the top of the drawer and place a piece a tape in the center and mark the center point. {MOST IMPORTANT STEP!!! You will see why in a minute 🙁 }
3. Align the center line of the Jig with the center line you chose. Select which holes correspond with your style of hardware. We chose the 3rd row in the second section for our alignment. Mark your holes with the pen. Test your pull with the pen marks to ensure they are centered {Can you feel the impending doom}
4. Using the 1/4″ Drill Bit, drill all the way through the drawer at both pen marks. Be sure to drill level. You may also want to make sure that your holes are level once drilled. Also check to make sure the hardware lines up correctly. You can adjust the holes a bit by re-drilling if needed.
5. Using the 3/8″ Drill Bit drill half way into the drawer. This will allow for the pull to fit since it has a tapered end.
6. Once the holes are drilled, clean up the holes and remove the tape catcher.
7. Place the hardware on the front of the drawer and insert the screws through the inside of the drawer and tighten using the screw driver.
8. Step back and admire.
Knobs:
These are much easier
Steps:
1. Select which hole you would like to use from your jig. Line your jig up against the cabinet door and mark your spot with the pen. The one we used had a bumper on both sides, so it was very easy to line up.
2. Drill hole at pen mark through the door using the 1/4″ Drill Bit
3. Insert screw into the hole and tighten knob on to the screw using your screw driver.
4. Step back and wish the pulls were that easy.
Quick tip: Take your time on measuring the center…….J was going too quick and made a booboo. He realized the mistake after he drilled because he skipped lining the pulls up to the pen mark. He is very good at math but when he was trying to find the center of an 17 3/4″ drawer he marked the center at 9 7/8″ {and for those of you saying whats the big deal….wells that is an inch too much, the center is at 8 7/8″}…….he was really mad at himself, but I was busy making chocolate chip cookies- so I told him “no biggie, its not the end of the world”, when I was really thinking ‘If I don’t get those cookies finished soon so they can be in my belly-that will be the end of the world’!
So he re-drilled the holes and we puttied the hole that was on the outside. I actually think its not a big deal but J just wont let it go….oh boys and their ego’s! He is going to buy a new cabinet and take the drawer out and replace ours. HD is still having the 20% off sale on cabinets, and with our 10% off coupon it will be less than $80, so it is not a huge mistake, but a costly one for going too fast. So don’t be like us on this one, TAKE YOUR TIME, especially if you have cabinets that cost more than $80.
Hope this tutorial helps, and guess what…photos will be up TOMORROW of the kitchen! Holy crap!
