Obviously we are lovers of all things DIY. We really enjoy trying to do as many things as possible DIY style, but there are times that we are now learning to just leave it to the pros. For instance, two nights ago. J asked for my help for a quick tightening of the cold water faucet in our bathroom. An easy in and out project. Now if it was something a bit more major, like a massive leak, then I might have called up someone like this San Diego leak detection company, but I guess I’ll just save their number for another day, since we can easily tighten a cold water faucet.
Notice cold handle way too far back |
My super handy hubby was able to fix the handle within minutes, and I thought that was that.
Heres how the next convo went J-“Hey babe, I think I can totally fix our shower handle. I think all I would have to do is cut/saw/remove just a little bit of it so that its flush with the wall” A-“Really? You don’t think it will be hard or tricky?” J-“Nah, I totally have it. And if I don’t think I can do it, i’ll stop”.
Haha.
So with me thinking hes got it all under control I go to sit out and enjoy the amazing weather we have right now on our front porch. Two minutes later I hear “ADRRRRIIIAANNNNEEEEEEEEEE. GETTTT INNN HEEERRRREEE NNNNOOOWWW”.
Oh crap, he cut is hand open, he slipped, the dogs did something…these are the options in my head-none true! I run into the bathroom to find him DRENCHED, the bathroom DRENCHED, all the while the water is still spewing out from where our “easy to fix” handle used to be. I immediately freak out and he tells me to turn of the main water line. Huh? Main water what?! Once I figure out where it is I simply try to turn the knob. Nope-defintiely needing a wrench for this sucker.
Meanwhile- picture a freaking waterfall in our bathroom. J fully dressed standing in the tub trying to contain it. Finally we got the water off {prob. about 5 min!!} and we thought all was well {you know, minus my drenched bathroom}. Turns out from so much pressure going out, we ended up breaking the pressure balancer. We then had to call a plumbing repair company who fixed it for us. Which turned a $369 bill {which THANK YOU GOD we have a home warranty, so we only have to pay $55}.

All in all, every things fixed, we laughed until we cried, and we will never probably not any time soon attempt a plumbers job. It’d probably be best for us to call a melbourne plumber next time, no?
Have you DIY a job and it went terribly wrong? It turns out to be kinda funny right?!

Oh man, that totally sucks but at the same time it is one of those situations where you both look at each other [and look back on it] and just smile. All the fun part of doing DIY projects right?

Yay for warranties! That would make me feel like I could try any project… knowing I could call them after I broke it, hahahah.

Thanks for providing narrative information on plumbing. If you don’t successfully discover the leak or you do not have any idea of plumbing then you should hire have a skilled professional to tackle the job or just call a licensed and reliable plumber.

My first try on DIY plumbing was a total disaster, and it was flooding all over the house that day. That was the first and last time to have that problem though. Every time we have plumbing issue, if I can fix it, I do it. But if I’m not that confident, we call our plumber right away. It is the best solution to solve any plumbing issue for me.
