One Of Those Days

This morning at 7:30 I woke up to this:

Honey {our Puggle} thought it would be a genius idea to dig out almost all of the dirt and flowers from the planter.
Melissa Young Photo
Keep in mind I just had to buy different flowers {on sale-thank God} because my previous ones weren’t holding up to the heat as well. I just planted those new flowers last week, then this morning she did this. She has never dug in the planter, which is why its so weird that she did today. Once I saw this I went and bought a little more flowers {because she completely ruined some} some more dirt, and a supposed miracle worker Liquid Fence. Liquid Fence is supposed to keep away any animals, and is totally safe and harmless if sprayed directly on to plants and herbs. I got all the flowers back in, sprayed the dog repellent and relaxed. This evening I left the dogs out front {we have a white picket fence that keeps them in} to play for NO MORE than 10 minutes, and this is what I walked out to:

Yes. Yes, that is the other side of the planter now emptied. She must be a perfectionist and wanted the dirt out front of the planter to be equal on both sides, and man did she accomplish that! I’m glad she didn’t hurt herself after doing this otherwise I would have needed to bring the vet in for a check up, more here on that for other dog moms because who knows what she could have accidentally done. Dogs can hurt themselves in the weirdest ways.

Flowers are now re-planted AGAIN, and I am just praying that they don’t give up on me. It’s just the weirdest thing that she has never messed with the planter, and now it’s twice in one day. I lost my mind! Literally! If Honey does this again, I don’t know what to do. Does anyone have advice? Other than the spray crap that apparently my dog doesn’t mind!? I know, I can take my dog to Puppy Training Classes Newcastle (or one near our location), but I want to try my best before I resolve to take the assistance of a professional.

The incident however, has opened my eyes to the need for dog training since their puppy-hood, which helps them shape their behaviour when they grow up. Apart from the best large breed dog food or even small breed dog food, it is important to mould their behaviour as well.

That’s not it! I already was dealing with issues. We were having a sprinkler issue in that area, and that just got fixed yesterday. Now I will have to clean my backyard again. Please, friends with pets! If you’ve had this happen to you before- what the crap did you do?!?!?!? I’ve been told that websites like https://www.ilovechihuahua.dog/ and others similar to it (depending on the breed) can help with getting dog advice, but I need specific flower-based advice right now seems!

Sorry- I know I said I’d post Napa pictures today, but this issue is kind of consuming my freaking thoughts!

Help!

We have a puggle too and I know just how “devious” they can be. She normally digs when she’s bored or if the new mulch smells like something she wants to roll in – have you tried new soil?

Hello!! I have a min pin and a bull terrier. My suggestion would be to be outside with the dogs. Your puggle might need some “added” training. She needs to know that that area is not allowed. Remember that dogs need to be caught in the act, while they are being bad; cause if you scold them afterwards, it’s no luck.

    Hope this helps? ๐Ÿ™‚

Adri, My parents had a similar issue with their dog…digging in planters. Once they secured chicken wire to cover the flower bed, their dog stopped digging. I recommend covering the flower bed with chicken wire (perhaps archig the wire, allowing room for the flowers to grow) in addition to some reinforcement/training. Once you feel like Honey “gets it,” then remove the wire and keep a close a watch while she is in that part of the yard.
At least it’s just a flower bed and not a couch…or clothes…or your Rx sunglasses…or your computer cord…or the cord to your vacuum cleaner…or books… I’m definitely not speaking from experience or anything! ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚

Well your dogs lasted longer than mine; my boxers pulled all my plants out 22 minutes after I let them outside. I went outside to find all the soil on the ground and one of them laying in the planter while the other wagged excitedly waiting for me to be impressed at how good of a job they did destroying my plants. Now I only have hanging planters; what they can’t reach, they can’t dig.

Good luck! If you find a good solution, let me know. I’d love to have more plants, but can’t with these darn dogs!

I feel your pain! My dog dug up my garden the day after I planted it. We had to put a kennel around it so he couldn’t get to it. Best of luck to you.

A few weeks ago on apartment therapy a couple used a bunk bed as their planter to avoid this problem. They took the bottom apart and just left the top bunk. Painted it a fun color and then either had potted plants or covered the whole thing in dirt. Now a bunk bed maybe be too big and out of the ordinary but I’m sure you guys could build something up off the ground! Good luck!

So this will seem kinda gross but it worked with my Jack Russell, who is a little demon and loves to dig… Put some of the dogs own poop in the planter. It’s actualyl good for your plants and the dog won’t want to go near its own poop… worked for my cute little devil digger.

Sorry to be kind of gross… but sounds like you would be willing to try it at this point!

Wishing your flowers a speedy recovery!!! If it makes you feel better, our cat digs at the rug like it’s dirt. ๐Ÿ™

Cassie is right… It sounds gross.. and you don’t have to do it for too long.. but if you put HER poop in the bed she won’t go anywhere near it! This also works for holes they dig in the yard! And it will be good for the plants too! After a week or so.. mine never did it again…
